Beijing Recital May 2024

To great critical acclaim, Jean Beers (piano/composition) & Yilin Han (accordion/performance) presented a ground brakingly innovative duo recital, in May 2024 at the New Classical Chamber Concerto Hall in Beijing. Besides solo works for piano and accordion by Ravel and Beers, the fourhand piano duo "Fantaisie" in f minor by Schubert was presented in this new arrangement (Han). Furthermore – to great success –they performed a duo improvisation "Secrets" that combined the beloved chinese folk song "Jasmine" with musical "phasing" techniques by Steve Reich and a research concept by Jean Beers that examines non-verbal communication through musical improvisation and unbroken intensive eye contact between the performers. At the heart of the recital emerged an epic centre piece, the new collaborative composition for accordion and electronics by Han and Beers "Nü Shu – Suite" (2022-2024). This substantial work for solo performer (Yilin Han) spans over 35 minutes and combines highly virtuosic accordion playing with extended techniques such as singing and percussive sound effects on the instrument body alongside electronics (tape) and theatrical movement and dance elements from performance art traditions. The electronics tape was composed by Beers from sounds recorded on the accordion (Han) to give rise to the sounds of dripping blood or heavy breathing and others, as well as text fragements supporting the conceptual narrative of this feminist composition about women's struggle and emancipation through the ages. – More about the concept and compositional process in the article on the "Artistic Research" page. – The work demands utter mental concentration, emotional strength and dedication and an immense physical control and stamina.
